Posted Thursday, February 01, 2007 3:10:26 PM by Blog57 Team
SONY BMG has agreed to settle charges that it secretly embedded potentially damaging anti-piracy software in some of its CDs, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said. The settlement requires Sony BMG, a joint venture of Sony and Germany's Bertelsmann, to make further disclosures, to allow consumers to exchange the CDs at issue and reimburse consumers for up to $US150 ($194) to repair any damage to their computers, the FTC said. "Consumers' computers belong to them, and companies must adequately disclose unexpected limitations on the customary use of their products so consumers can make informed decisions regarding whether to purchase and install that content," FTC chairman Deborah Majoras said in a statement. The FTC said Sony BMG violated the law by embedding some music CDs with software that installed itself on consumers' computers without their consent and restricted the number of times the audio files could be copied....

Researchers in the anti-virus and anti-spyware world are losing the battle against "botnets," the millions of zombie PCs that are used to send out spam and other nasties. Simply put, a botnet is a collection of PCs with high-speed connections that have been hijacked. Estimates are there are millions of compromised PCs (many in homes) that are waiting to be used by gangs that are used mostly to send trillions of spam messages all over the world. Symantec, the anti-virus vendor, did a study that found 4.7 million infected computers during one scan it performed. And that surely didn't get them all. If you've been getting those penny stock pitches in your e-mail (or notes offering sexual aids, herbal medicines or illegal software) you've been the victim of a spam attack from a bot....

The anti-spyware company Sunbelt software is warning computer users about the rise of computer software masquerading as legitimate security software. The sites try to trick users into paying for software that is ineffective at securing their computer, and may even be malicious in its own right. They've seen cases of bogus software - much of which comes from the same companies and is simply re-branded - increase over the past month, and warn that it could be a significant threat for the coming year. The company claims that the Max Spyware Detector 2.0 can improve detection of spyware by using smart scan proprietary technology that modifies how a computer is scanned, helping reduce scan time by up to 20 minutes during the second and subsequent scans. On this occasion, Sanjay Pradhan, Chief Executive Officer of Max Secure Software, said, "Consumers have been asking for an anti-spyware product that can detect spyware, and doesn't take all day to do it. Before Max Spyware Detector was available, consumers were spending an average of 25 or more minutes waiting for their anti-spyware product to do its job, but now as a result of Max Spyware Detector, we've been able to cut consumers scan time down to only a few minutes at the longest." Pradhan added, "Max Secure Software employs a dedicated database team, which uses state-of-the-art spyware research methods to identify and resolve new spyware threats before they are widely distributed....

New cyber alert

HOME computer users in Bahrain are being warned of a surge in cyber crime, as fraudsters devise new ways to steal people's identities. Criminals have moved away from producing large-scale viruses that attack PCs and laptops, to more covert ways of causing damage and stealing information, says Trend Micro Middle East and North Africa regional director Justin Doo. The latest ploy to gain private information involves using Bots, a small application that can be downloaded inadvertently. It sends a note to the users telling them that a malicious software is present in their computer and can be activated any time. Bots are often circulated by people who sell the information to criminals to use it for illegal activities. The software can be used to co-ordinate a large automated attack on networked computers or to gather personal details from users....
